St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow
Centenary Composition Competition:

Entry requirements:

The competition is open to all. The work submitted must be newly composed and must never have been performed. The closing date for the competition will be Sunday May 11th 2008. Each composer may submit only one entry. Manuscripts may be submitted in any paper form, handwritten or computer generated, but not electronically. Manuscripts must not bear the name of the composer, but should be accompanied by the entry form, which will not be seen by the adjudicators. Please supply five copies of the manuscript. Competitors who wish their manuscripts returned must supply a stamped addressed envelope of suitable size. Entries are to be submitted by post to: Mr Alistair Fulton, Office Manager, St Mary's Cathedral Office, 3, Napiershall St, Glasgow, G20 6HQ. Please mark the envelope "For addressee only".

Competitors are required to compose a musical setting of the Ordinaries of the Eucharist, according to the 1982 Liturgy of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

The following movements are to be set: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Benedictus, (either as one movement, or two movements that segue easily) and Agnus Dei. In addition, the Sursum Corda, the Gospel Responses and the Dismissal may be set. Full texts are to be found attached.

The texts are to set in a way that is performable by a congregation accompanied only by organ (or piano) and expresses an air of celebration. It is also highly desirable that there be optional parts for choir (SATB) and / or additional instruments in any combination.

Adjudicators
The adjudicators for the competition are to be;
James MacMillan - internationally renowned composer
John Bell - church musician, composer and facilitator of creative worship on a global stage

Prize
The winning entry will awarded a prize of £500, and a guaranteed performance in St Mary's Cathedral on September 7th, 2008. It may well become a regular setting to be used by the Cathedral and the wider church.

The composer will retain all copyright and publication rights and royalties, but will be required to designate the setting as the "Winner of St Mary's Cathedral Centenary Composition Competition". St Mary's Cathedral reserves the right to the first performance, and to publish its own copies for exclusive use by the Cathedral.
